A quoted unit margin can look healthy on paper and still fail in live traffic.
In 2026, the issue is less whether freight exists as a cost and more whether the billed shipment is likely to match the quote you used in planning.
Why? Because dropship freight is usually modeled from the supplier's best-case quote, not from the shipment shape the buyer will actually pay for. A lightweight item in the catalog can become a dimensional-weight item after protective packaging. A "7–10 day" line can become a refund trigger if actual delivery drifts beyond what the storefront promised. A low-value product can survive a $1 product-cost increase. It often cannot survive a $4 freight miss.
For low-ticket products, freight variance is often the business model.

1) Quoted freight is a starting point, not a usable margin input
Supplier freight quotes are useful. They are not enough.
The first quote is usually built for conversion. It may reflect a favorable lane, a temporary rate window, or a simplified package assumption. That does not make it false. It makes it incomplete. 2) Packed dimensions matter more than catalog dimensions
This is where many dropship margins break.
Carriers commonly price small parcels using actual weight or dimensional weight, whichever is higher. Major parcel carriers such as DHL and UPS publish dimensional-weight formulas and surcharge structures that operators use as planning references. That means a pillow, lamp, organizer, or bundled home item can bill like a much heavier product once void fill and outer packaging are added.
Catalog dimensions do not prove billable dimensions. They set the burden of proof.
The stranger the gap between product size and quoted freight, the more evidence the supplier needs to show. Ask for packed dimensions, packed weight, and packaging photos from a real shipment configuration. 3) Delivery promise creates a hidden P&L line
A shipping quote and a delivery promise are tied together.
If your storefront sells on a 6–8 day expectation but the route reliably lands in 10–14, the issue is not only customer experience. It is refund exposure, chargeback risk, support cost, and lower reorder confidence. Those reports are directional signals, not audited datasets.
Fast-looking ETAs are cheap in spreadsheets. They are expensive in support tickets.
4) Refund exposure decides whether the product is resilient
A product with a 22% gross margin before refunds may be weaker than a product with a 16% gross margin and stable delivery.
Why? Because one reshipment or one refunded late parcel can wipe out the profit from several successful orders. This is most obvious in low-AOV categories, impulse buys, and products with fragile packaging. The right question is not "What is margin if everything goes right?" A compact worked example: if a product costs $12, platform and payment fees total $5, and the supplier quotes $6.80 freight, a $29.99 selling price may look workable. But if packed dimensions push billed freight to $10.80, your contribution margin drops by $4 before any refund or reship is modeled. On a 20-order sample, that is an $80 gross-margin shortfall versus plan, and one delayed-order reship can push the SKU from acceptable to weak.
If you cannot fill those six lines with evidence, you do not have first-order economics. You have a supplier pitch.
What this means for product selection
Freight-cost changes in 2026 do not kill dropshipping. They change which products deserve to scale now.
Compact items with low breakage risk, low dimensional-weight exposure, and flexible delivery expectations are more forgiving. Bulky, fragile, low-ticket products are less forgiving, even when their factory cost looks attractive. Watch the stack, not any single signal.
The product with the cheaper unit cost is not always the cheaper product to sell.
